Denver, Madison and I are sitting at the kitchen table eating dinner. I'm trying to act normal, but it's not so easy. Denver and I prowl around each other like two lions ready for battle, but still unable to judge our opponent one hundred percent. Since our kiss a few hours ago, things have gotten even worse. We need to talk so badly to finally know where we stand. Neither of us wants to do anything wrong because we don't want to provoke another fight. His apology meant a lot to me, and I am eagerly awaiting the moment when we can be alone to talk. I want to know what's bothering him and what the deal was with his buddies. I know I was wrong to think that he saw me as a little sister, at least after the kiss.

The longer Denver is around me, the more I need to talk to him. I need to know where I stand with him so that if the worst happens, I have a plan to deal with my broken heart.

Denver gave up his room for Madison so she wouldn't have to sleep on the couch, which I think is very commendable of him. She thanked him and disappeared into it for a few hours.

Meanwhile, Denver and I tried to get on with our daily lives. I let Millie, Joy, and Phoenix know that I was back home, and then I retreated to my room for a while. I didn't tell them about the kiss. I don't want to freak them out unnecessarily.

Madison is wearing black leggings and a black top. She's also taken off her makeup and doesn't look so scary anymore. What's going on with her that she's changed so much?

"Where are you from, Sienna?" she asks, smiling at me.

"I'm from near Helena."

"Montana," she replies proudly, and I nod. "Why are you studying here?"

"I liked the program at Lincoln the best."

Denver gets up and puts his plate away. I watch him go, watching the play of his back muscles under the thin white t-shirt he wears. I have to stifle a sigh from Madison.

"I'm going to take a shower," he says curtly and disappears from the kitchen. Madison watches her big brother and bites her lip.

"He's mad," she says quietly, poking at her pasta.

"Are you surprised?" I ask, giving her an admonishing look. "You ran away from home and..."

"You're mad too!"

"I'm not mad," I sigh. "You're fifteen, Madison. Something could have happened to you on the way here."

She nods guiltily and continues to pick at her plate. I close my eyes for a moment, trying to think of the best thing to say. She can't stay here forever and I think she knows that.

"Yeah, I know," Madison says, pressing her lips together knowingly. Her fork scrapes across her plate, making that annoying squeak that makes my skin crawl. "Just a few days."

"You'll have to talk it over with Denver."

"If you tell him you're okay with it, he'll take it better," she answers with a smile.
